The Hidden Valley High School prevention club along with Mrs. Worrel (Teacher) gathered at Wasena Park on September 20th, 10 AM for the annual out of darkness walk.
The out of darkness walk, organized and held annually every year, helps eliminate the stigma of mental illness and suicide, and to raise awareness that suicide is preventable, and that no one needs to struggle alone. These community walks, held in hundreds of cities across the country, are the main part of the Out of the Darkness movement, which began in 2004. Mrs. Worrel stated, “The event helps support those who have suicide ideation, or those who have been impacted by suicide”.
Mrs. Worrell, Prevention Club staff sponsor, exclaimed, “it was very touching to hear some of the speakers and how suicide has touched their lives and their families”, proving how impactful the walk can be for so many people.
After last Saturday, the Out of the Darkness movement has big plans and will continue to have the walk every year, hoping to increase attendance every year as well. Mrs. Worrel stated, “If any Hidden Valley students wanted to attend next year, I would say they should, because it’s not a very long event and is very impactful”.
The Out of Darkness Walk marked not only another community event off the list but gave the support hundreds of kids needed and raised awareness to the whole community about suicide prevention and mental health. So, next year make sure you attend the out of darkness walk to support mental health and the Hidden Valley High School prevention club.
