Students in Roanoke County can expect major changes for the upcoming school year with the construction of a new Burton Career and Technology Center, a project designed to expand hands-on learning and career readiness, soon to approach completion. The facility is currently under construction on Peter’s Creek Road near the Bojangles, and is projected to be completed by winter 2027.
The new center will come with a significant investment, as the county plans to spend about $75.8 million on the building and its programs. According to the project outlines, the goal is to provide students with access to modern equipment and specialized training in fields such as technology, trades, and other career focused areas.
The project, which started in July 2024, will impact a wide range of students across the county. School officials and planers say the center will help better prepare students for both college and the workforce by offering real world experience while still in high school. New programs to be implemented include dental/orthodontic assistance, diesel technician, collision repair, and HVAC. Unfortunately, Burton will also see the closure of its art-centered programs, with the Performing Arts program closing this year and Visual Arts completing its final year in 2027.
Faculty, students and teachers are asked about their expectations and concerns. Many find that the new building will help facilitate new opportunities for students, while others are curious about how it will change class schedules due to the increased drive for some.
Overall, the new Career and Technology Center represents a major step forward for education in Roanoke County. As construction continues, students and staff alike are waiting patiently and are anticipating how the new building will shape the future of learning in this community.
