The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is about SpongeBob trying to prove that he is brave and grown up. At the beginning of the movie, the movie shows Spongebob’s fear to ride a roller coaster. This makes him feel embarrassed and not like a “big guy.” He tells Mr. Krabs about his fear and Mr. Krabs brags to Spongebob telling him that he used to be a Swashbuckler and that Spongebob needs to man up. Spongebob wants Mr. Krabs to see him as brave so he blows into the Flying Dutchman horn pipe.
The Flying Dutchman summons from the horn pipe calling and offers SpongeBob the chance to become a big guy and a swashbuckler but he is lying. He only wants to use SpongeBob to get his human body back. SpongeBob completes dangerous tasks because he wants to prove himself and become a swashbuckler.
When the Dutchman turns back into a human, the conflict becomes more serious. In the end, SpongeBob must chase down the Flying Dutchman, which leads him to an even bigger roller coaster than he was faced with before. This time, he rides it without letting his fear stop him. He steals back the Dutchman’s horn, turning him into a ghost again. By facing the roller coaster and chasing the Dutchman, SpongeBob finally proves he is brave.
The movie’s main themes are bravery and self-acceptance. It shows that courage comes from facing your fears, not from trying to impress others. Overall, the movie is funny and entertaining, but it also has a good lesson about believing in yourself. I rate this movie a 6/10. It is easy for younger audiences to understand but it wasn’t truly a cinematic masterpiece overall.
