Senior Lily Ratliff plans to attend Virginia Tech this fall to pursue her interest in chemistry. After four years at Hidden Valley High School, Ratliff leaves behind memories, accomplishments and personal growth that helped shape who she is today.
“High school is often described as the time when you ‘find yourself,’ but for me, it felt more like slowly learning how to become myself,” Ratliff said.
One of Ratliff’s favorite high school memories came during her junior year, when she and her friend Sarah worked together to finish a last-minute project. The two woke up at 5 a.m. to complete it, creating a memory Ratliff said she will never forget.
“It was chaotic and imperfect, but it turned into one of the funniest and most meaningful memories I have,” Ratliff said.
Although Ratliff said she struggled with social anxiety as a freshman, she learned to embrace her individuality and develop confidence in herself over time. She credits many of her friends and classmates for inspiring her to express herself more openly.
“Watching friends express themselves freely, especially through things like art, showed me that passion isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being honest,” Ratliff said.
Looking back, Ratliff said she would encourage her younger self to be “unapologetically yourself,” a message she hopes others can also take to heart.
Outside of academics, Ratliff has been heavily involved in the Hidden Valley Titan Marching Band, where she developed a love for playing the oboe. She hopes to continue pursuing music and other creative hobbies in the future.
“I want to learn embroidery,” Ratliff said. “I’ve also started crochet, which I’d like to keep improving on.”
As she prepares for graduation and the transition to college, Ratliff said she understands that she does not need to have every aspect of her future planned out.
“I don’t have everything figured out — and honestly, I don’t think I’m supposed to yet,” Ratliff said. “What I do know is that high school shaped me in ways I never expected.”
With her passion for creativity, music and science, Ratliff leaves Hidden Valley prepared to take on the opportunities and challenges ahead.
