On April 22, 1970, an event began that would soon spread globally and spark change in the U.S. government: Earth Day! Don’t let the opportunity to celebrate our planet pass you by this year and help out in your community!
Sophia Bowles (9) says, “Earth Day is a day dedicated to Earth to raise awareness for global heat and pollution because we want to fix that.” As climate change worsens, it’s important to remember the importance of maintaining our planet.
Hosted by the Clean Valley Council, a great way to enjoy Earth Day this year would be to attend the Roanoke Earth Day Celebration on Grandin Road. The event usually takes place on a Saturday near the special day. The people of Roanoke gather with food, music, and a heart for sustainability.
There are other ways to appreciate Earth if you miss the celebration on Grandin. “You could plant a tree,” suggests freshman Kaitlyn Kingsley.
Alesha Bratton (9) adds, “Or you could go vegan for a day.”
Volunteering can be a fun way to aid your community. Helping through the Clean Valley Council consists of picking up litter and cleaning waterways. You can plant trees using organizations like the All Natural Tree Experts or Forest Tree Services. If Bratton’s suggestion piqued your interest, a campaign such as the “Go Vegan for the Earth” hosted by PETA is a good way to have like-minded people support your environmental efforts.
However you choose to celebrate this Earth Day, remember to be safe and have fun! Go Titans!
