April 1st is know around the globe as April Fools’ Day, this day is dedicated to tricks, jokes, and pranks. These jokes can range from harmless pranks to over the top viral internet pranks; this day gives people an excuse to break free of a routine, to have fun, and share a few laughs. Sometimes not everyone is being amused with these jokes.
The origins of this day are unclear, but historians often trace April Fools’ back to the 16th-century Europe. There are many theories about where this day began but nothing is confirmed. A popular theory suggests it began when France switched the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, moving new years celebrations from late March to January 1st. Those who still celebrated in late March joked and called it “April Fools”
Today the tradition of April 1st has evolved among children, teenagers, and adults. However, some jokes may not be seen as humorous. Some seem to cross the line and upset people. “I thinks April Fools’ Day is fun as long as the jokes are not taken too far,” said Claire Mitchell, a high school student. “Like if everyone is laughing at the end, then it is a good prank, but if someone is upset, then it ruins the while vibe.”
As April Fools’ Day is continued to be celebrated worldwide, in classrooms, and between friends the message stays exactly the same: Have fun, be creative, and the most important factor is that everyone is having fun and can laugh along.
