On Thursday November 13th, at Hidden Valley High School, there was a Beta Club induction ceremony for new members. National Beta is the largest independent, nonprofit educational youth organization in the United States, recognizing students for outstanding academic achievement. At Hidden Valley High School, Senior Beta Club membership requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.8, which must be maintained through the end of senior year. In addition to academic excellence, the club emphasizes strong character, social responsibility, and active service to both the school and the community. HVHS Beta members are also required to complete at least 40 community service hours over their two years of membership.
During the induction, new members are welcomed into the honor society and pledge to maintain academic excellence, have strong integrity, grow as leaders, and serve our community by engaging in school and community service. The Beta induction ceremony is planned by Mrs. Harner and Mrs. Dermott based on ceremonial suggestions from National Beta. “We rely on assistance from the Culinary Department, IT Department, custodial staff, and our administration to have it run smoothly.” Said Mrs. Dermott.
Service hours are a very important part of Beta Club. How do you get your service hours? Members of Beta Club may choose where to serve. “Many choose our school community or the local Roanoke Valley community while others serve on mission trips with their churches or outside organizations both stateside and internationally.” Said Mrs. Dermott. All service hours must be documented using the Hidden Valley Volunteer Log and verified with a signature from the organization’s volunteer coordinator. Hours completed for class assignments or those that earn academic credit cannot be counted toward community service requirements. Community service is a core component of Beta Club because it helps members build leadership abilities, strengthen interpersonal skills, and develop strong character through meaningful involvement.
