This month, November 7th, 11th graders at Hidden Valley High School took a career test, commonly used by the military to determine enlistment qualification, but also used for civilians to figure out what careers would best suit them.
The ASVAB is a 9-part multiple choice test, measuring many different abilities including math, science, English, and multiple other skills. Normally the ASVAB is used to determine what people enlisted would be qualified for, but was recently taken by students at HVHS ,to determine strengths, weaknesses, and identify potential career paths.
When considering military jobs, if you receive a low score, your career field options become extremely limited, while the opposite applies when you receive a higher score.
Although this testing could be useful to some, other students questioned the necessity for it. Many students have already decided what they are going to study and become in the future and were still required to take the test. Autumn Rose (11) says “I felt like I was wasting my time because I already know what I want to do.”
Another student recognizes the importance for some but also did not feel like they needed to take it. When asked “Do you think this test will help you decided for something in the future?” Mahee Bhagat says, “Probably not because I already know what I want to do, but for some if might be helpful in deciding a career path.”
The ASVAB may have been useful to some students but not to all. Many were reluctant to take it and did not feel as if it would help them, but some will find this extremely helpful when figuring out which jobs they qualify for.
