Since its recent escalation in popularity, artificial intelligence rapidly became a global phenomenon. The immense media coverage and worldwide attention quickly attracted students, because of the diverse range of academics offered with these platforms.
As a result, plagiarism and cheating rates surged and took school boards by surprise. In hopes of reducing this problem, A.I websites were blocked, and detectors were installed on many school’s laptops.
Hidden Valley’s assistant principal, Mr. Jablonski, shared his thoughts and opinions on the matter. He alleged that administration has seen a prominent escalation in plagiarism and cheating at the school, leading to higher rates of suspensions and write ups. Jablonski also expressed concerns about the possibility of this negatively impacting younger generations by being used to replace teacher instruction and influencing critical thinking skills, stating that “the students aren’t doing any of the thinking, the computer is.”
A.I carries a large risk factor of users forming a dependability and having lower analyzing abilities on it, because it is so accessible and requires much less time and thinking.
However, Rachel Parades, a Hidden Valley junior, has contrasting opinions. She expressed the belief that A.I benefits students in the world of education and explained “if I don’t know something in my class, I can look into A.I to get a deeper explained answer.“ Rachel overall prefers it over traditional methods of studying and appreciates the personality she can add, specific to her class and learning style.
The most used platforms such as Chat GPT and Google Gemini offer brainstorming, flashcard making, and personalized practice tests. This can make studying a quicker and more enjoyable experience.
The impact regarding the recent rise in AI platforms has become a widespread topic among schools and nations. Artificial intelligence was once looked upon as a dystopian concept, but it is now at the tip of your fingers. Majority of people will agree that its rise has had a significant impact on the education world, but controversy regarding whether it’s a positive or negative impact, is still up for debate.
