The Hidden Valley High School Marching Band, a group of talented students, musicians, and dancers, showcases its skills every Friday night at the high school stadium during football games. During each game at their home field, Bogle, or away at opposing teams’ stadiums, the marching band enhances the spectators’ experience with their musical talent and dance choreography and improves the overall experience for attendees.
Marching band is more than just an extracurricular; it’s a community where passion and dedication come together. The band director, Mr. Galyen, shares, “I have two older brothers who were in the band in school, so I have been going to band performances since I was in preschool.” This close connection with the band builds a passion for music and helps create a strong sense of leadership. Mr. Galyen believes that the essence of the marching band lies in both enjoyment and growth, highlighting “the first goal for the band is for each student to enjoy their experience making music both as an individual performer and as part of a team.” This approach not only encourages musical development but also strengthens bonds among the band members. Alongside this, he is committed to achieving higher standards of excellence, with the aim of earning a “Superior” rating at the VBODA assessment.
Beyond the competitions, the band regularly participates in community events, performing the national anthem before Salem Red Sox games, marching in the Virginia Veterans Day parade, and marching in the Vinton Christmas parade. Students in this program also have the ability to volunteer at Virginia Tech for the combined marching band. This blend of striving for excellence and engaging with the community represents Mr. Galyen’s commitment to providing a rich and rewarding experience for every member in the band. The Hidden Valley High School Marching band fosters discipline, teamwork, and a passion for music, preparing the school for success both on and off the field.
