Breast Cancer Awareness Month

For most people, when they think of October, they think of Halloween. However, October has a more personal meaning for some because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For everyone that has struggled with having breast cancer, been a survivor of breast cancer, or has had a loved one with breast cancer, October has a special meaning to them. While for some it might be hard because their loved one passed away from the disease, some families still like to raise awareness for others that are going through what they went through.

Susan G. Komen is an organization for breast cancer in the United States. The organization focuses on patient navigation and advocacy. They provide resources to breast cancer patients and fund research to determine the cause of breast cancer and get a better treatment for patients currently fighting the disease. Susan G. Komen holds fundraisers as well to raise money for research to find better treatments and hopefully to find more efficient ways to detect cancer.

An anonymous breast cancer survivor was diagnosed at the age of 32 in 2015. “It was a shock at first, especially being so young but I was so determined to beat it, for my daughters, husband, and myself.” She celebrates breast cancer awareness by living her life to the fullest and creating awareness for other women to educate themselves on the disease.

In conclusion, October is not all about the candy and trick-or-treating of Halloween but is a special month and a great time to donate to organizations like Susan G. Komen that help spread awareness of breast cancer.
