The Titans Varsity Basketball team just wrapped up their season, finishing 21-5 and becoming 3D Regional champions. This was one of the most dominating seasons that Hidden Valley basketball has seen. Led by Steele Torrence, the Titans were able to overcome the likes of Cave Spring, Christiansburg, Northside and many other teams in dominating fashion. Their regional playoff run was also very strong. This team started their postseason with a win against Lord Botetourt 66-49, then heading to Northside (The Neutral Site for the Tournament) to defeat Abingdon 67-56 and ended by defeating Christiansburg for the third time this season 57-46. These results allowed them to crown themselves Regional 3D Champions! This season didn’t come easy for the Titans though…
Everyone had high hopes for Hidden Valley with all the seniors having undeniable talent as well as sportsmanship. Coach Hutchins had a very deep bench, allowing him to be able to rotate players whenever and wherever. They started the season at Northside. As expected, this was a scrappy game, but the Titans came out on top winning 47-44. They would go on an eight-game win streak before losing to Patrick Henry due to a lack of key players. Fortunately, they were able to bounce back and go on a five-game win streak. They lost to the Patriots once again and then to John Handley from Winchester. They finished the regular season with only one loss out of five. “The season went well; we had a couple losses that we shouldn’t have but it’s okay we are on the come up” (Steele Torrence 12).
After regionals, the Titans were able to receive the home court advantage in the State playoffs where they hosted Western Albemarle, a team who came off a loss to Liberty Christian. Unfortunately, they started off slow in the first half and could not come back. The Titans lost 62-54. Even though this wasn’t the result the team and the fans were expecting, it has been one of the most exciting seasons to watch, and they had all of Roanoke on the lookout. “I felt like the amount of people coming to the games throughout the season helped us, but I didn’t feel much pressure on me or the team because we know we are a good team” (Riley James 12).
