Coach Garner is a familiar face to many student-athletes at Hidden Valley, having already established himself as a dedicated mentor within the school’s football program. His transition from coaching football to leading the track and field team stems from a desire to maintain athletic consistency and foster a year-round culture of speed and discipline. Garner views track and field as the ultimate foundation for all sports, and his move was motivated by a commitment to helping Hidden Valley athletes reach their peak physical potential.
Stepping into the role previously held by Ms. Oakes, Coach Garner is focused on blending the team’s established strengths with fresh energy. When asked about his primary goals for the upcoming seasons, Garner said he aims to build a competitive program across the board.
“Taking over right before indoor season is actually a huge advantage because it gives us a strong foundation to develop athletes heading into outdoor,” Garner said. “My focus is to help every athlete grow academically, athletically and personally. I want them to get faster, stronger and more efficient in their events while building confidence and discipline that extends beyond the track.”
Regarding his coaching philosophy, Garner said his approach centers on transformational coaching, emphasizing motivation through a clear vision and strong relationships.
“I focus on motivating athletes with a clear vision, inspiration and strong relationship-building,” he said. “My goal is to help them elevate beyond what they believe is possible. Creating a family-like atmosphere and a positive, hardworking culture is extremely important to me. We will work hard this season — no question — but the payoff will be worth it.”
Coach Garner confirmed he has consulted with Ms. Oakes on several occasions to ensure a smooth transition.
“She has been phenomenal,” Garner said. “She gave me a strong overview of the team’s dynamics, strengths and areas where we can continue to grow.”
To support that growth, Garner is leaning on an experienced coaching staff while identifying key areas for development. Coach Stewart will continue his work with distance runners, while Coach Kochenderfer remains with the high jumpers. Additionally, Coach Wade will join the staff to help develop long and triple jump athletes.
“Coach Garner brings a high level of intensity and a genuine care for the students’ growth,” Oakes said. “The unique opportunity he has this season is to bridge the gap between our strength programs and our speed programs. I was hoping for a coach who would prioritize character as much as performance, and I feel Coach Garner fits those expectations perfectly.”
As the 2025–26 indoor season begins, the Hidden Valley community looks forward to seeing the Titans sprint, jump and throw under Garner’s leadership. With a focus on discipline and a background in multisport coaching, Arkaile Garner is ready to help Hidden Valley track and field hit its stride.
