The Oklahoma City Thunder was crowned NBA Champions for the 2024-2025 season. Star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or SGA for short, led the thunder to their first ring after beating the Pacers four games to three. Every opening night for the past season’s NBA champions they have a ring ceremony. The Thunder were no different this year, but their opening night was a little bit unexpected.
The Thunder’s ring had over 800 gemstones and multiple little quirks that make their championship run special. They got their new rings, but the Houston Rockets came to town to spoil the party. KD led the Rockets with 23 points, 3 assists, and 9 rebounds. This wasn’t enough though; Shai and the Thunder were able to hold off the Rockets after taking them to double OT, and they won by one point.
People are skeptical about OKC this year and if they can win the Western Conference, especially with the young San Antonio Spurs roster led by Wembanyama. “I think Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) will take the Spurs to the finals over SGA and Thunder.” (Jonathan Hamilton 12). “Victor is nice, I think the spurs can win the Western Conference.” (Treydon Quallis 10). SGA has been under a lot of criticism because of how much goes to the foul line. Some say he’s an overall good player, and others say he’s overrated. “I don’t think SGA is the best right now.” (Jonathan Hamilton 12).
It is going to be an interesting season to see how the Thunder can replicate the success from last season, especially with new teams coming out of the Western Conference looking like legit contenders, like the Spurs, Lakers, or the Timberwolves.
