This past January 25th-February 3rd, the entire East Coast of the United States was hit by a huge snow and ice storm that ranged from Maine to all the way down in parts of Georgia, affecting states like Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana with temperatures dropping below freezing.
Millions of families were affected all up and down the East Coast with multiple power outages and shortage in goods as stores were struggling to keep up with the high demand that local civilians brought to them. “I was not really affected that badly during the storm. My power stayed on and I was only trapped inside for about a day or two before I could get out and go back to what I normally did,” states Carter Yost (11) about his experience with the massive snow/ice storm.
In Virginia, specifically Roanoke, there were not many families that were dangerously affected as Roanoke had a accumulation of about four inches. Other counties, such as Craig County up north, faced heavier snow and had closer to a foot of snow on the ground.
Roanoke County Public Schools had a little over a week off from school due to the ice that formed on roads. Noah Womeldorf (11) goes on to state, “I enjoyed the break we had from the ice even with the virtual days; I was able to stay home, sleep in, and play on my Xbox.”
The question is, will we face another snow storm here in Virginia? Many people think there will be no more storms and spring will start to poke around the corner bringing warm weather. Both Carter Yost and Noah Womeldorf agreed that winter is over and warmer weather will start to roll in bringing spring and pushing out winter.
