Actress comedian Cathrine O’Hara passed away on January 30th in Los Angeles hospital. Known for her comedic roles in Schmidts Creek as Moira Rose , Beetlejuice as Delia Deets, the Home Alone franchise as Kate McCallister, and many more. She committed much of her life to acting starting when she was 22 years old and dedicating over 50 years to it.
She passed at 71 from what has recently been revealed to be a pulmonary embolism or better known as a blood clot from rectal cancer. Her last public appearance made prior to her death was in fall 2025 during the Emmy awards, where she was nominated for her appearance in The Last of Us and The Studio. She also disclosed in 2020 that she had been diagnosed with dextrocardia with situs inversus (when organs are on the opposite side of the body), but this has recently been revealed to have no part in her death.
O’Hara was born in March 1954 in Canada and was 1 of 7 children. She met her husband, Bo Welch, on the set of Beetlejuice, he was a production designer. They had been married for over 30 years and had two sons together, Mattew and Luke Welch. O’Hara has won exactly 35 awards including Emmy’s, golden globes, actor awards and more.
This death has had a heavy impact on her family and co workers. Bo Welch stated, “ In the next life, I will still be you husband.” Eugene Levy, who co stared in multiple movies and shows with her stated he had the “honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years.” Macauley Culkin who starred in Home Alone with O’Hara wished expressed he “ wanted more time”.
Catherine O’Hara had an amazing impact on so many people’s lives; she contributed so much to the movie world and to the lives around her. Millions mourn her death and she will forever be known as an amazing actress.
