Shirley Raines, founder of Beauty 2 the Streetz, was found dead in her home in Henderson, Nevada on January 27. Known as “Ms. Shirley” to her millions of followers on social media, she worked tirelessly as an advocate for homeless people in Los Angeles for almost ten years before her passing.
Ms. Shirley founded Beauty 2 the Streetz in 2017 because she noticed that while many organizations provided food and basic necessities, there was a lack of small luxuries for the homeless. Ms. Shirley wanted to help restore dignity and self confidence, and through her nonprofit, she began to offer hair styling, makeup, and other hygiene products. She has also been open with her own struggles with homelessness and losing her sone as a young adult inspiring her to found Beauty 2 the Streetz.
Every weekend, Ms. Shirley and her team would be at Skid Row, where they would serve food or provide beauty services. She would often document her events for social media to bring awareness and challenge stereotypes regarding homelessness. In her videos, Ms. Shirley used uplifting and endearing names when addressing the people she was serving, and for many, this was the first act of compassion they had received in a long time. Anuva Giri (12), stated that she has been watching Ms. Shirley’s videos for years and has inspired many 0f her own volunteer efforts. Choice was also large part of Beauty to the Streetz’s mission. The nonprofit prioritizes making unhoused people feel that they have the option to make choices in life, even if it’s just choosing what flavor chips they want.
Ms. Shirley created a lasting legacy as an unwavering and compassionate advocate for the homeless. Beauty to the Streetz will continue her work, honoring her hard work and service.
