When Scream 7 finally hit theaters on February 27, 2026, fans had strong feelings because the franchise seemed to be experiencing an identity crisis. It was mostly filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, which stood in for the new setting of Pine Grove, Indiana.
The movie even featured a massive, fiery opening scene at a replica of Stu Macher’s house. The biggest news was Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott, especially since she had not appeared in the last film. She was joined by Courteney Cox as Gale and even David Arquette in some strange flashback or dream scenes. With Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega absent, the movie introduced new faces like Isabel May and McKenna Grace, who played Sidney’s daughters, Tatum and Jessica.
Leading up to the release, the internet buzzed with wild fan theories, such as Stu Macher being alive in prison or that the killer used AI deepfakes of dead characters to torment Sidney. In the actual story, Sidney’s family becomes the target of a group of killers seeking revenge for events from earlier films. It was much more violent than the previous entries, with plenty of blood and jump scares, but the “meta” commentary about horror movies felt a bit weak this time. Some fans enjoyed having Sidney back as the main hero, but many critics gave it poor reviews, claiming it relied on “nostalgia bait” and that the plot was too simple compared to earlier films. Although it broke box office records due to curiosity, fans continue to debate online about whether it was a successful return or just a messy way to keep the series alive without the newer stars.
