The Burton Engineering Program is hosting a design challenge in partnership with Altech that trials students to design and plan for an engineering innovation that will help improve the community. This project is meant to encourage young minds to analyze issues in their communities and to help create solutions. Altech holds these competitions in communities where their presence is strong. This competition is in its 5th year, and the winners get $10,000 to implement their ideas.
Many students feel that this project is great for the class as it can be applied to real life. Eli Raymond (11) stated, “Yeah, I think this project is great. It really makes us think and it’s definitely more interesting than last year”. He seemed very confident in his group to win the competition. Some of the projects this year were a method to provide early flood warnings for drivers on highways, ways to keep drivers awake, and how to keep speed down around blind corners. They have an imagined budget of $10,000.
This project is a great way to engage students in their second year of class and show how everything they’ve been learning can be applied to real life. Last year, Laila Ramey and her group won, and their project where they built emergency call boxes on hiking trails and they had first aid stations for isolated places along the trail. This spring, their ideas will be brought to life at Carvin’s Cove. They will get to see their projects become reality.
On December 11th, we will get to see who follows this performance, so be sure to go back and check! Good luck to all of our titans who are participating!
