Choir students from around Virginia who were selected for All-District Choir are eligible to audition for the All-Virginia Choir. Two students from Hidden Valley Highschool were selected to audition on November 2nd, 2025 in the high school choir room.
In All-Virginia Choir auditions, students are evaluated on two elements, Prepared Selection and Sight-Reading. Prepared selection is a predetermined piece that’s chosen by the Virginia Choral Directors Association (VCDA) and will be performed for adjudicators. Sight-Reading is students showing their musical literacy by performing a short unseen passage.
Mr. Miller a choir teacher at HVHS says, “Each Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) district sends its top singers, the top four scorers in each voice part such as, Soprano I, Soprano II, Alto I, Alto II, Tenor I, Tenor II, Bass I, and Bass II, to represent their district at the state level.”
Lily Stanley, an 11th grade Soprano I at HVHS and Isabella Shellnut, a 12th grade Alto I were selected to the VCDA All-Virginia Choir, both in Vocal Ensemble and Chorale here at HVHS. November 2nd Lily Stanley and Isabella Shellnut auditioned for All-District and later used their All-District audition to audition for the All-Virginia. They were apart of the Treble Choir.
Lily Stanley (11) says, “The hardest part of the audition process was my second meeting”
Students chosen for the All-Virginia Choir received a packet of music to prepare in advance. The top high school singers from across the state came together at a three-day festival to perform and rehearse under nationally recognized conductors. This took place on April 24-26th, 2025 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. During this Festival students stayed at the Richmond Marriott and the Richmond Hilton.
“I think it was just a great experience, with the event, I grew a lot as a musician, was around many talented people, and my director were just amazing,” states Lily Stanley (11).
Overall, participating in the All-Virginia Choir shows student’s dedication, hard work, and talent’s in the performing arts. Not only does this rare achievement bring choir students from around the state of Virginia together, but it’s also a good opportunity to learn from nationally recognized conductors and fellow students.
