Senior Holly Griffin moved to Roanoke from Bracey, Virginia, in 2019 and is now graduating from Hidden Valley High School. She is a member of the Titan 12 and is involved in several clubs, including DECA, Beta Club, Medical Explorers Club and French Club.
Holly has also been a member of the girls varsity soccer team since her freshman year, where she says many of her favorite school memories were made.
“Coming into high school, I didn’t really know anyone, but joining the team gave me an instant sense of belonging,” Griffin said. “It broadened my social circle, pushed me to grow as a leader and taught me how powerful it is to work toward a common goal with people who believe in each other. From intense practices to late night bus rides and unforgettable playoff games, those memories are the ones I’ll hold onto the most.”
Griffin credits two teachers in particular with helping her navigate high school.
“Two people immediately come to mind when I think about who’s had the biggest impact on me: Mr. Hunt and Dr. Neale,” she said. “Mr. Hunt, my marketing teacher and DECA advisor, has been much more than a teacher — he’s been a mentor and a friend. Dr. Neale, my sophomore year English teacher and my soccer coach all four years, has shaped me in just as many ways. I wouldn’t be the leader or the person I am today without their constant support.”
Though she had a great high school experience overall, Griffin does have one regret.
“If I could give my younger self any advice, it’d be to stop caring so much about what other people think,” she said. “The right people will respect you for being genuine, not for trying to blend in. Confidence doesn’t come from being accepted by others; it comes from finally accepting yourself.”
Griffin also highlighted the role of her friends in making high school more manageable.
“High school can be overwhelming, and having friends by your side can make everything a little easier,” she said. “Liza Willis and Sara Elsanjak have had a huge impact on me throughout high school. They’ve both been the most loyal, supportive and caring friends I could ask for. I’m so grateful for the bond I’ve built with them over the years.”
Holly will attend the University of Tennessee in the fall, where she plans to major in international business. She’s excited for the new people and opportunities that await her.
Hidden Valley will miss Holly immensely, and we look forward to seeing all she accomplishes.
Congratulations to Holly Griffin and the entire Class of 2025!
