Roanoke College is officially back on the football field for its first official collegiate season. As for writing, the Maroons are 4-1 with their only loss being to Randolph Macon. Head coached by Brian Stinespring, he has jumpstarted this football program looking to turn it into a division 3 powerhouse. Championship City is ecstatic by the addition of this football program, and the numbers prove it. Over 5,500 people came to Salem Stadium to watch the electric Maroon offense score of twenty points and held the VUL Dragons to seven. Led by quarterback Kam Hill, he made sure to put on a show for the fans. Throwing 169 yards with a TD and his supporting cast of Sophomore running back Tyson Miller gaining eighty-five yards for Noke and the other Sophomore running back Polo Hill grabbing a TD and sixty-nine yards on the ground. The defense did their thing as well. Holding the Dragons offense to only eleven first downs and holding their run game to a negative twenty-one yards. Roanoke looks dangerous.
Putting a good performance on the field is important, but the real goal for a growing program is to keep the recruits interested. “I like the atmosphere of Roanoke College games, they bring a lot of energy, and it makes me interested in joining their football team.” (Marcus Johnson 11) “The games are very fun to go to, and it is something to look forward to every Saturday.” (Omega Princely 10) This is the goal for Roanoke College to keep the fanbase growing and the recruits coming. A good 4-1 start was unexpected for a year two teams and it surprised lots of fans. “I am very impressed with the start, I did not think they would be this good.” (Marcus Johnson 11)
Everyone is very excited about the uprising of this Maroon football team. They have a gauntlet of a schedule coming, and we hope that they can continue this success and bring a championship-to-Championship City.
