This year’s spring musical at Hidden Valley High is a classic, upbeat story many students here recognize and love: High School Musical Jr.! High School Musical Jr. follows smart, pretty Gabriella Montez as she moves to a new school and becomes romantically involved with popular basketball star Troy Bolton. This causes a social upheaval in the school and cliques begin to dissolve as Gabriella and Troy fall for each other.  

The musical will have some of the most popular songs from Disney’s movie version, like “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free.” Other characters join the unusual couple on stage, such as popular girl Sharpay Evans and Troy’s best friend Chad Danforth. Sharpay Evans, a sharp-tongued mean girl with a penchant for drama, immediately targets Gabriella as an enemy and seeks to take her and Troy down with the help of her twin brother Ryan. Chad alternately discourages and supports his friend Troy in doing what he loves, providing a voice of reason and comic relief. All the friends and foes sing as they try and reach their goals. The high schoolers also perform in dance numbers during songs including “We’re All in This Together” and “Get’cha Head in the Game.”  

The musical is sure to be a blast, especially after the popularity of last year’s Into the Woods. Tryouts are set to be in early January, and they are open to all, including those new to theater! Come be a part of High School Musical Jr.!
