On February 22, 2024, the Hidden Valley High School choir went to Richmond, Virginia to compete against other Virginia schools. In this competition, the chorale had to perform their hardest with advanced songs in an attempt to be the best. This event is a high honor because the choirs that attend are not just any choir. To join the choral or vocal ensembles at Hidden Valley you must audition. It is not a choir that anyone can just join. The choirs are evaluated on their ability to perform highly advanced songs and their ability to sight read.
When asked as to what exactly is the importance of this event, Student Director Salma Diaz (11) stated that “It’s because it’s a fun event you get to try your absolute hardest on something that you’ve been working on since before winter break and it’s also important because we can get the opinions of judges who know what they’re talking about and they give us advice to help us in the future.”
Because she is a Student Director, Salma has an important role especially when it comes to these types of events. When asked as to what exactly her job entails, Salma responded, “I basically substitute for Mr. Miller when he’s not available to teach or lead us and sometimes I lead the class in warms ups.”
They received their results that same day and when asked how they performed, Salma responded, “We got a rating of superior and vocal ensemble got third out of three choirs. It did hurt a bit because last year we got third place out of all of those choirs and when we didn’t receive that it was kind of a bit of a blow but that just means that we have to try harder next year and hope for better results.”
