Thanksgiving has come around quickly this year, as it was on November 23rd, in the United States. A hot topic for this time of year is side dishes. My family, friends, and I have decided to rate the different thanksgiving sides, and this article reveals the results.
Thanksgiving sides normally include mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, cornbread, rolls, sweet potato casserole, butternut squash, mac and cheese, beets, ham, cranberry sauce, and of course turkey.
My family personally loves stuffing. Stuffing is a food specific to Thanksgiving, as you do not see it much around any other time of year. Stuffing pairs perfectly with turkey, and there are many different types.
When I asked my mom what her favorite side was, she answered, “Mashed potatoes are the best side, by far. It tastes amazing year-round, and adding spices can make them taste spectacular. Normally I pair mashed potatoes with turkey, making it festive.”
Personally, my favorite thanksgiving side is mac and cheese. Even though I am dairy free, I still make room for my grandma’s warm, cheesy mac, though, mashed potatoes are a close second. Even though these sides are eaten year-round, they feel extra special on Thanksgiving.
This year, my family had turkey, mac and cheese, rolls, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, almonds, and cranberry sauce on the table. My family’s favorite side by far was surprisingly mashed potatoes, as there was none left at the end of the meal.
Claire Mitchell (10) is a student who absolutely loves Thanksgiving. Mitchell says, “Thanksgiving brings people together. It is a time of giving thanks for things you should be grateful for.” Referring to sides, Mitchell noted, “The rolls are my absolute favorite. Rolls go with any food; you can’t go wrong with them. They are extremely hard to mess up. I pair them with rich butter, or I like to make a sandwich out of the roll. I cut the bread in half and put smoked ham in between the bread. It is easy, and delicious.”
Thanksgiving sides were debated this year and will be debated next year. Whether you are watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, or the National Dog Show, the food you eat while watching is what you remember. What is your favorite side?
