Leaves are falling and the air has a whiff of apple cinnamon, the Halloween season has officially started! Parties are being planned, as are costumes, and my Pinterest is certainly filled with unique ideas. In a room full of this year’s Barbie and Oppenheimer costumes you can outshine the crowd with these simple costumes.
Certainly not everyone will know these niche costumes just by batting their eye, but a trained eye and fellow fans will love these costumes. Katherin Diaz (10) shared her opinions on niche costumes.
“I dress up for myself and even though it is nice when people recognize the costumes It’s more fun when its not really recognizable and another person knows what it is.” Diaz says.
Sharing interests, fashion, and humor on Halloween is one of my favorite parts of dressing up and expressing myself without being judged. That is why I like to share my personal ideas.
Every girl out there has seen some variation of a princess costume, there are many versions but none are particularly interesting after the age of thirteen, with the exception of The Princess Diary’s Mia Thermopolis. A simple set of a white mini ballgown style dress, white gloves, sneakers, and the recognizable statement pieces of black sunglasses and black wired headphones is all that is required to achieve the vision of the adorable and classic childhood movie, The Princess Diaries.
An even more niche choice and a bit more complicated costume that not a lot will recognize is Ramona flowers “Scott pilgrim vs the world”. This is a wider and more flexible costume since this character has several outfits. However, a necessity would be a vibrant colorful wig styled, a green cargo shirt dress, striped gloves, and combat boots.
Halloween costumes love to be scary and blood soaked, but those who have watched the gory and terrifying cult movie Midsommar will see your Dani costume as the most disturbing costume of all. Simply get a white dress, preferably with blue embroidered designs, and make yourself a complex flower crown. This could even work as a duo costume with your partner as a bear, referencing the movie’s ending.
Breaking Bad duo costumes may be my favorite Halloween costumes, especially Jesse and Jane. This costume can have many variations, but maintain Jesse’s baggy clothing, hoodie, and beanie, and Jane’s iconic black hair with bangs, paired with a monochrome black outfit made with black jeans and a layered adorable shirt.
The classic costume of the gingham dress, red heels, and hair bows of Dorothy from the The Wizard of Oz (1939) film will always look adorable, no matter what age. This costume is also great for a duo or group costume including the cowardly lion, the tin man, and the scarecrow. For an even better duo costume you can do the characters Glinda and Thee Wicked Witch of The West. I love this movie since there is such a wide variety of costume interpretations and cute ideas.
Lastly, my favorite costume idea and one of my favorite movies, Romeo + Juliet (1996), is Juliet’s angel costume. This is a simple costume, consisting of a long vintage white dress, cross necklace, and angel wings. Before you know it, you will have an adorable costume that is both recognizable and simple. An even cooler interpretation of this costume consists of adding makeup in the style of the show Euphoria, for example the character Jules’ did her own sparkly and alternative take on this costume.
The world of Halloween costume ideas is huge and these are just some of my very simple last minute ideas. Express your ideas and put love into your costumes for the real Halloween spirit this year, because surely we will see a lot of Barbie and Ken variations, and I love seeing everyone’s Halloween costume posts.
