Moving can be a huge transition, but moving schools at the midpoint of your high school career represents several challenges. Starting over again has been quite a challenge so far, being that I’m coming from a different state that has a completely different school system. In New Jersey school starts in September, which is when I happen to move to Virginia, where school starts in August. Missing almost a whole month of school put me at a disadvantaged position since I missed a good amount of education, leaving me a bit clueless in many classes. Coming into the school year late has also stalled my credits for my junior year because my old school hasn’t helped transfer my NJ info to Hidden Valley, so it’s been quite stressful.
The process of trying to regulate your own emotions during a stressful time like this has been a challenge on its own. I came from an alternative school where I attended from 3pm to 6pm which I prefer more than a regular day school. Having to switch back to day school has been hard to get used to again, being that I went from 3 hours of school back to 7 hours. This has taken a bit of a toll on my mental health which makes learning even harder. Overall, in my opinion I wish I had just stayed in NJ until I graduated so I didn’t have to start over again, but I had family issues that forced the move to happen much sooner than expected. My mother is taking care of my brother and I alone now so she needed to go somewhere she could afford, and my older sister happened to live here so this was her most affordable option.
Although it’s been nothing but stressful since I’ve arrived, there have been some good things that came along with this change in my life. I’ve realized that sometimes change at the worst point of your life is the best thing that could happen. It brings a new sense of life into your point of view and teaches you that taking new paths other than the one you’re used to can bring you many good things and new realizations about what you want your life to be like when grown up. It’s teaching me to handle random changes maturely and to really focus on changing bad habits.
