The New Generation Cartel of Jalisco has sent death threats to VMA artist nominee Peso Pluma on September 14, in Tijuana, Mexico. Peso Pluma has been rising in the charts of Latin America as he is one of the top artists right now. Pluma is one of the only Mexican artists to be featured on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. His main genre is Regional Mexican and sings narcocorridos.
Narcocorridos in translation is called a “drug ballad” and has been around since the early 20th century when gangster rap became popular in the United States. Narcocorridos are songs that contain stories involving the drug trade. One of the most popular singers in the nineties who sang these songs was Chalino Sanchez. Unfortunately, by doing this Sanchez got into trouble, not being allowed to sing in some states, because although he never said the exact names of cartels, there was a lot of innuendo. On May 16th, 1992, Sanchez received a note during his concert in Culiacan, Sinaloa which said “if you do not end this concert, you will not make it out alive.” He was found dead the next morning.
New generations of narcocorridos now consist of the artist saying who they support and which cartel they sing about This is extremely dangerous as rivel cartels do not take to kindly of it and can result in them being banned from singing in certain states of Mexico. In a song where Peso Pluma is featured he sings “Y pa’ chambear con don Iván. Soy de la gente del Chapo Guzmán.” He is talking about working with one of El Chapo’s sons and that he is a member of El Chapo Guzman. The cartel that threatened him was Cartel Nueva Generacion Jalisco which is the rivel of the Sinaloa Cartel. When the threat was discovered, it said, “This goes to Peso Pluma refrain from presenting yourself on October 14 because it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue, you show up and we are going to (break you).”
When asked what a good reason could be why he was sent these threats, Emmanuel Salvador (12) responded, “It definitely has to be because of all the names he’s said, like it’s always been a basic rule of thumb to not say anything and keep it anonymous to stay safe from everyone.”
This genre is changing over time, like every genre it changes and moves on. When asked if the genre is changing in a good way, Emmanuel responded, “I don’t think it is because I feel like this isn’t going to be the last time we’re going to see a threat. I feel like more artists are going to be targeted if they keep up the way they are singing.”
A big question that is rising with this is: will he cancel his concert? Emmanuel responded, “I think he will because for his own safety and for the safety of others.”
