On Sunday, November 13th a shooting occurred at the University of Virginia (UVA). The shooting left three football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry dead and 2 other students injured.

Prior to the shooting, the shooter Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. and the victims were riding the bus home after the class had seen a play in Washington, DC. Police are still trying to determine why the deaths of the three UVA football players might have occurred. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the rampage, and those who knew both the suspect and victims have struggled to come up with any concrete possibilities.

“I’m not really sure why he would have done it, but I think he might have been jealous. It might have had something to do with the football team. Maybe those players were favored by the coach?” Ella Desimone (12).

According to UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo Sr., Jones was detained on Monday morning and was charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun to commit a crime. Jones was moved from Henrico County to the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on Tuesday afternoon following his arrest. According to court documents, he is scheduled to show up in Albemarle General District Court on Wednesday for a bond hearing.

The most recent information was made public hours after the University of Virginia head football coach Tony Elliott described the previous 24 hours as “a nightmare” in his first public speech following the shooting. Speaking in front of the public for the first time after three of the events, Elliott stated, “I’m ready for somebody to pinch me and wake me up and say this didn’t happen.”

At a vigil held on Monday, candles were put around the Statue of Homer and posters reading “UVA Strong” and “1-15-41” — the jersey numbers of the three killed players — were displayed on the Charlottesville campus.

“It was incredible to witness all those students showing such support for one another. Actually, it was therapeutic,” according to UVA Athletics Director Carla Williams on Tuesday.

There are still concerns regarding the future organization of football and the University as a whole while the team and community grieve. According to Mike Mather, managing editor of UVA Today, classes will resume at UVA on Wednesday.
