Killer Mike won the Rap Album of the year award on February 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, but fans are wondering if he deserved to win it.
The album that won the award is called Micheal and it obtained roughly 44 million streams on all streaming platforms. However, the album that Travis Scott released, called Utopia, received over 2.1 billion streams on all streaming platforms, which raises the question: how did an album that barely had a Billboard top 100 hit win over an album that had multiple?
If an album receives 2.1 billion streams, that should be considered a huge deal because that’s almost a quarter of the world’s population. When asked as to why he might’ve won the award, Japhon English (11) stated, “It’s probably because they thought his was better quality. I personally don’t agree with that idea, but he inspired some of the rappers now, so I guess its more of like a respect thing I guess.” Many fans and spectators were saying that Travis Scott was snubbed of his award and that he deserved to win it.
When asked as to who deserved it, Japhon responded with, “I think Travis Scott should’ve won because if an album has 2.1 billion streams, it would mean that the quality and the production was good. An album with 44 million streams is not bad, but compared to one that has 2.1 billion, to me that’s a huge difference.”
A lot of fans also noticed that this happened to Travis Scott when he released his last big album in 2018 and lost the Rap Album of the Year award to Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy. When asked if this was almost an exact replication to the 2019 Grammy awards, Japhon responded with, “It definitely was because the outrage was the exact same; a lot of people were furious when he didn’t win that year and this year. He deserved to win it last time and I don’t know how he didn’t.”
