The music group/band Boygenuis has been nominated for six Grammys in the upcoming 2024 Grammy Award Show on February 5th, in Los Angeles. Boygenuis is nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album. This is an extremely exciting accomplishment for the band, being as bands around the world can only dream of getting nominated for one Grammy. Lets take a look into Boygenuis and their journey to this astonishing accomplishment!
Solo artists Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers came together in 2018 and started making a lot of music in a short period of time. Shortly after, they ended up forming what rapidly became an alternative/indie/rock music sensation called Boygenuis. Baker, Dacus, and Bridgers all started as solo artists before forming Boygenuis, but have become more popular as a group than as they were as solo artists in a very short span of time.
“I listen to Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, as solo artists, [but] I don’t really listen to Julien Baker as a solo artist, they sound amazing together as a group,” says Chloe Herold (10).
The bands name “Boygenuis” is inspired by the music industry and pop culture’s idolization that lets males think from a young age that they are “geniuses” and will succeed in anything they do, for the simple fact that they are males. The band, all females, use this name to make a powerful statement against male egotism. That message has came through very well, as many females around the world can relate. Baker, Dacus, and Bridgers, all being apart of the LGBTQ+ community themselves and being female, they are making a statement to the world that you can be not what is considered “normal”, you can be female, and do as much, if not more as any male.
Since they came together in 2018, the band has made more music and has had many accomplishments leading up to the Grammy nominations. They released their self-titled EP in 2018, came out with their album The Record in 2023, and they released their second EP The Rest in 2023. Boygenuis is on tour, selling out in places like the Madison Square Garden. Their Album The Record was named an “instant classic” by NME, it topped charts in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK, and reached number four on the US Billboard 200. Having many other accomplishments such as this, it shows how much effect this band has had around the world. One song that has become unarguably the most popular of this group is called “Not Strong Enough.” This catchy, emotional song that has had voice in peoples lives, is about how men are always seen as Gods and as though they are above women.
Jack Barbour (11) says, “‘Not Strong Enough’ is my favorite song, I listen to it all the time.” All of their songs have made an impact and they will continue to do so in the coming years. Even if the band does not win all of the Grammy’s they are nominated for, they have said before in interviews they don’t do it for the fame but for the joy it brings them and fans. Overall Boygenuis is a music power group and will continue to connect with people all around the world and at the Grammys.
