With an angels voice and a young, complex, and loving mind Mitski has a heavenly combination and the potential to be one of this generations most amazing artists. The love for her only grows with each album release. This includes her latest release of “The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We”.
This beautifully deep album is filled with striking lyricism, taking a look into love. Love is an active term, as Mitski states, loving is the most beautiful art a person does in life.
“To love is the best thing I ever did in my life, better than any song I had ever written, better than any achievement by far. To love is truly the best and most beautiful thing I ever did.” Mitski states in her album announcement setting the theme for this emotional album.
“The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We” starts with a pre released single “Bug Like an Angel” and blends into a story about love and trying to hold onto it. The following song, “Buffalo Replaced”, may remind listeners of a country and western genre and sets the tone for the rest of the album.
“Heaven” is a fairy tale inspired song with the lyrics “Now I bend like a willow thinking of you. Like a murmuring brook curving about. As I sip on the rest of the coffee you left. A kiss left of you.” expanding on the pain and longing for a person when you had given them full love but it was hopeless.
The next songs “I Don’t Like My Mind” and “Deal” represent the longing wish to be someone else or change one’s own life. The next four songs have feelings of acceptance over the coarse of life, all which show Mitski’s devotion to her love.
I discovered Mitski through her album Puberty 2 where she speaks of her self worth and love, aswell as the effects of her childhood and personal experiences. The moment I truly appreciated Mitski’s lyrics I felt complete and understood as a person. With this new album released, the song “Bug Like an Angel” reminded me of her past albums but also presented a new style and feel to her music.
To love is to experience and feel, and Mitski’s album teaches listeners to be grateful to fully experience love even if you may get hurt. Mitski’s unstoppable writing is inspirational and emotional and I personally greatly liked this album. If you look forward to listening to emotional and artistic songs, Mitski is surely the artist for you.
