Hidden Valley High School welcomed a new face to its English department this fall. Ninth-grade English teacher Mr. Lucas joined the staff for the 2025-26 school year, teaching in Room 208 of the English pod. In addition to his classes at Hidden Valley, Lucas also teaches middle school students at Cave Spring.
Lucas has taught at several schools throughout his career, but he also stepped away from education for a period to pursue work in the corporate sector. He said the experience has shaped his approach to the classroom.
“Since the last time I was a teacher, I’ve gone out into the corporate world and learned a lot about business, and I’ve gained a new perspective on jobs and what employers might want,” Lucas said.
He now uses those insights to prepare students for life beyond high school, blending English instruction with skills essential in the workplace. His lessons often include discussions and interactive activities designed to build both communication and collaboration.
Freshman Marcella Griffith said she values Lucas’ approach. “I always look forward to Mr. Lucas’ class,” she said. “I love the environment he has created, and I enjoy the discussions because they make the classroom feel communicative and collaborative.”
Lucas said teaching ninth graders has been a new and rewarding challenge. “I haven’t taught ninth graders, so it’s a newer experience for me, and it’s been going great so far,” he said.
Students and staff alike see a bright future for Lucas at Hidden Valley. With his combined experience in teaching and business, he brings a unique perspective to the classroom, one that prepares students academically while equipping them with skills for the future.
