Among the many additions to Hidden Valley High School this year, one stands out: Officer Shrader, who is serving as the school’s resource officer for the 2025-26 school year.
School resource officers are a relatively new position in many police departments, created in response to the rise in school violence. “School resource officers are important because they investigate issues that occur in our school and help maintain safety,” said junior Evan Cobb.
Social media bullying has become a growing challenge for schools, influencing how students interact with one another. Shrader said he finds value in addressing those issues while also connecting with students.
When asked to compare patrol duty with his current role, Shrader said, “Every day on patrol is different, but right now, I’d say I like being an SRO more.”
Many students recall the bomb threat that disrupted school on Aug. 25. Shrader’s presence highlights the importance of an SRO in ensuring safety before classes can resume.
Beyond handling high-pressure situations, Shrader said he strives to build positive relationships with students, whether through a quick greeting in the hallway or a longer conversation. Senior Alan Barker said that effort makes a difference.
“Seeing Officer Shrader makes me feel so much safer knowing if something were to happen, he was here,” Barker said.
Students and staff agree Shrader is more than a security presence — he brings approachability and reassurance. His role at Hidden Valley contributes to a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
