At Hidden Valley High School, there’s something new happening on the courts. No, it’s not basketball or tennis—it’s pickleball. Behind all the paddles, there’s a growing community of teenagers looking for fun. What started as a simple idea has turned into a thriving club with many members.
Alan Barker, the president of the Pickleball Club, noticed that something was missing from our school’s extracurricular scene. “There were many students who wanted to play pickleball but didn’t really know how to get into it. I also wanted to foster student connections and help build relationships,” said Alan Barker (12).
Alan’s love for the sport began with one of his friends. “Jackson Lubeck (12) and I started playing when I was a bit younger, and I’ve been playing ever since,” Alan explained. That early spark grew into a vision for a club where students could show up, play, and just have fun. His goal for the club is simple: “To have lots of fun.”
Stephen Neale (11), a co-founder of the Pickleball Club, has helped shape its rhythm. “We’ve hosted many social events for the club. Every Thursday at 7 p.m., we meet at Garst Mill Park,” said Stephen. These weekly gatherings have become a space not only for practice but also for unwinding, catching up, meeting new people, and building friendships.
While tournaments haven’t started yet, they’re definitely on the way. “We plan on hosting tournaments in the future,” Stephen said. The team is eyeing the YMCA in Tanglewood Roanoke as a possible venue and is brainstorming ways to make events inclusive and exciting for everyone.
With more students taking an interest, the club is thinking bigger. “We’re making sure to get new members, as well as new facilities and equipment that will help us increase our exposure,” Stephen explained. The goal is to make pickleball feel accessible to anyone curious enough to give it a shot.
When asked to sum up the sport in three words, Stephen replied: “Lots of fun!”
Whether you’re already a seasoned pickleball player or just curious about the sport, the Pickleball Club is ready to welcome you. With big plans for growth, strong leadership, and a whole lot of heart, this club is proof that the best things often start with a few friends and a shared serve.
