As graduation approaches, Riley Phillips looks back on his high school experience with appreciation and excitement for the future. From great memories with friends to proud moments on the basketball court, Riley’s time in high school helped shape who he is today.
One of Riley’s favorite memories was beating Cave Spring in basketball—a highlight that shows just how much the sport meant to him. “Playing basketball is the extracurricular I’m most proud of,” he says, reflecting on his time on the team and the work he put in.
Support from both teachers and friends played a big role in Riley’s journey. He mentions Mrs. Donathan as the teacher who had the biggest impact on him. “I enjoyed going to her class every day,” Riley shares, showing how important a positive classroom environment was for him.
He also talks about his friend Ty Swank, who was always willing to help him with schoolwork. Their friendship made a difference—both academically and personally.
When asked what advice he would give his freshman self, Riley says, “Enjoy your time in high school, but work hard as well.” That balance of fun and focus helped him succeed, and it’s advice he’ll carry with him into college.
Speaking of the future, Riley is excited to attend Virginia Tech. Before college begins, he’s looking forward to a beach trip with friends this summer. While he hasn’t chosen a new hobby yet, he’s open to learning new skills and trying new things.
Riley also wants to stay connected with his high school friends as much as he can and continue helping others. “If someone needs a favor, I’m willing to do that favor for them,” he says, adding that in the future, he’d like to volunteer to help feed the homeless.
Right now, he’s most passionate about graduating and moving forward. He looks up to NBA star Jayson Tatum for being humble and skilled, and says his favorite movie is The Godfather Part II because of its action and complexity. If he could have dinner with any historical figure, it would be Jesus Christ, to be part of the Last Supper.
Riley’s high school story is one of hard work, kindness and growth—and now, he’s ready for what’s next.
