In April 2025, a heartbreaking violence struck two schools, one at Florida State University (FSU) and another at a Texas high school. These events left students, families, and communities hearts’ shattered.
On April 17, 2025 Florida State University in Tallahassee was jolted by a sudden act of violence. Phoenix lkner a 20 year old student and the son of the local sheriff arrived at the student union in an orange Hummer. A witnesses described him holding a riffle and pistol, opening fire on unsuspecting individuals. Unfortunately two people were killed. The first being Robert Morales the 57 year old director and assistant football coach and Tiru Chabba a 45 year old regional vice president for a campus vendor. Five others were injured including students and staff.
Lara Elsayyed (9) says, ” School shootings have been going on for awhile and schools should be able to keep students more safe and prevent these tragedy’s from happening. whether its adding more officers around the school or heavier security.”
FSU’s campus went into chaos, as some students hid in bathrooms and classrooms while others completely tried to leave campus. The police responded quickly where they shot and took Ikner after he failed to comply with their commands. Police found him with multiple firearms. Authorities are now investigating his motives. FSU canceled it classes and events and held a memorial near the shooting site to honor the victims and those who were affected.
Just days earlier on April 12th, a high school in Dallas experienced a similar tragedy. A seventeen year old entered the school through a side door opened by another student. Within two minutes he shot four students, even though the target was only one individual, due to an ongoing problems. The victims sustained non-life threating injuries and the suspect was later arrested.
Both of these cases are tragic for everyone involved, as well as millions of other individuals across the United States that fear for themselves and loved ones’ safety in schools.
