December is slowly approaching which means that Christmas is just around the corner. Many people claim that Christmas is their favorite holiday for several different reasons. In some households, lights and festive decorations start to go up before Thanksgiving. Christmas is a fun holiday to celebrate and there are many things to do in Roanoke to get in the spirit.
The first Christmas event is on December 14th and 15th at the Berglund Center. Southwest Virginia Ballet has been preparing for the Nutcracker since August. The Nutcracker is about a girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve. This is a fun event to go to with friends or family to get in the Christmas spirit.
Every Friday night from December 6th through the 20th, is Dickens of Christmas that takes place in Downtown Roanoke. It is something fun to do on a Friday night and walk around downtown with family and friends. There is a big Christmas tree with lights to take cute pictures in front of. There is also hot chocolate and food all around downtown. Hotel Roanoke has a range of Christmas trees decorated inside which are exciting to see.
Another activity is ice skating. There are two ice skating rinks in Roanoke. One of them is inside at the Berglund Center, and the other is outside just beside Elmwood Park. The outside rink has cute lights hung up through the trees which makes for great pictures. Ice skating can be a little scary for beginners, but the rink has walkers to help keep balance.
Another classic way to get in the Christmas spirit is listening to Christmas music. Driving around looking at Christmas lights on all the different houses in Roanoke is entertaining, along with a new holiday light event in Roanoke called Illuminights.
If you are looking for a cozy night in with family, make gingerbread cookies and watch Christmas movies. Making gingerbread cookies in pajamas and talking to family can make the best night. Another thing to do with family at home is decorate the house and put the Christmas tree up together.
There are so many different ways to get into the Christmas spirit. Many people say that Roanoke is boring and there is nothing to do, but Christmas is a good time to do things around Roanoke because there are so many options.
