This year, five Virginia teams made the NCAA tournament. Liberty, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Liberty and Old Dominion both had to advance by winning their conference tournament. Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Commonwealth all entered through at large bids.

Once in the tournament the teams varied in success. Old Dominions season ended in defeat in the first round, to the eventual South Regional runner-up, Purdue. VCU also fell early, losing to UCF and Tacko Fall, 73-58.

Liberty advanced with an upset victory over Mississippi State, 80-76. The next round they played Virginia Tech, and they were overmatched in that game, falling 67-58.

Virginia Tech had some success this year, advancing to their first Sweet 16 since 1967. They defeated St. Louis 66-52 in the first round, then beat the aforementioned Liberty team. Then they met Duke, in a great down to the wire game, ending in a heartbreaking loss for Virginia Tech, with Ahmed Hill missing a layup at the buzzer that would have forced overtime, as they lost 75-73.

Virginia’s season has yet to end, as the Final Four is later this week. They survived an early scare in the first round, that had some UVA fans having flashbacks to last year, but they pulled it out 71-56 over Gardner-Webb. The next game they breezed by Oklahoma, 63-51. The next game they had a narrow victory against Oregon, 53-49. Finally, they had a heart stopping overtime win against Purdue, with Mamadi Diakite hitting a buzzer beater to send the game to overtime, and despite the heroic effort from Carsen Edwards of Purdue, UVA won 80-75. They play Auburn on Saturday, with a National Championship appearance on the line.

This year has been very successful for Virginia basketball, fielding 5 teams, tied for most in the country this year.
