The Slap Seen Around The World

On March 27, 2022, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at Dolby Theatre where the Oscars were held on live television. Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s bald head due to her disease, alopecia.

Chris Rock’s joke hit home to Pinkett when he mentioned her new-found bald head. It hit even harder than Will Smith’s slap delivery to Rock’s face. Jada Pinkett-Smith has been candid about her struggle with the hair loss disease, known as alopecia, through its progression over recent years, which is why Rock’s comments were not taken lightly by the audience.

Rock’s joke went something like this, “GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see ya!” After Smith realized that the joke was funny to everyone except his wife, he took action and hopped unto the stage to slap Rock across the face.

As he sits back down, he says, “Keep my wife’s name out your mouth!” To which Rock responds, “I’m going to.” The event first seemed staged but judging by the audience’s reaction, it most definitely was not.

When asked if they thought Smith’s Oscar should be revoked, Sadie Henderson (12) said “I would, Andrew Garfield was way better than him anyway. Smith’s actions were uncalled for.” Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars for 10 years after winning his only Oscar for King Richard on March 27. This year’s ceremony was a very memorable Oscars for everyone indeed.
