After receiving backlash from British media, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle surprised the entirety of the country by stepping down from their royal responsibilities. This move partially came from derogatory scrutiny of Meghan Markle from British tabloids. Harry had publicly addressed the harassment on many different occasions, and even compared it to what his mother, Princess Diana, faced before her death.

The couple announced their departure from the royal family earlier in January, and would split their time between the UK and North America while trying to eventually become financially independent.

According to the prince, the decision to step down was not an easy decision for him or his wife.

“The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” Harry stated in his first public statement since his announcement.

He also indicated that he still wanted to serve the Queen and all other affiliations, with the exception of public funding, but that ‘wasn’t possible.’ The Queen in turn released a statement, revealing that Prince Harry’s departure had been going on for months prior.

“I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family,” said Queen Elizabeth in her public statement. “I realize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”

Despite receiving blessings from the Queen, Harry and Meghan have received a tremendous amount of backlash from their departure. Many of the British people were enraged, and even celebrated when Harry and Meghan’s wax figures were removed from the Royal Family set at Madame Tussauds.

Nevertheless, Harry and Meghan had their fair share of well-wishers, praising them for their choice to make their own path, while still choosing to remain present for Royal activities.
