Every 98 seconds someone is sexually assaulted or harassed. About 1.8 million adolescents in the United States are victims of sexual harassment and assault. Actions like these are so normalized in today’s society, that most harassers don’t even know they’re committing an action as so.

Sexual harassment is a part of everyday life in high – and even middle – school. A study in 2010 showed that “nearly half (48 percent) of the students surveyed experienced some form of sexual harassment… the majority of those students (87 percent) said it had a negative effect on them.”

A vast majority of people are unaware of the actual definition of the phrase “sexual harassment.” Could this be the reason it’s so normalized?

According to Nan Stein from National Violence Against Women Prevention Center, or NVAWPC, states that sexual harassment in schools is any “unwanted and unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature that interferes with the right to receive an equal educational opportunity.”

Any kind of sexual harassment in schools can range from words and gestures to unwanted physical contact. Some harassment may even go as far as criminal acts.

Now that the recent allegations and accusations have come out against those in Hollywood, the people in the U.S. have become more aware of the large epidemic that is known as sexual harassment. Society should be fully aware of everyone who has been a victim to any kind of sexual misconduct, outside the world of actors and actresses.
