I was not sure what to expect when I first entered the movie theater to watch Marvel’s new film Black Panther. I’m not the biggest Marvel fan in the world; I didn’t even know the Black Panther existed until the Captain America: Civil War. However, as each second of the movie passed, I became increasingly consumed in the story that was unfolding before me.

I was most intrigued by the immense world of Wakanda – the hidden technological superpower hidden behind the façade of a third-world country. With all the architecture and scientific advancement, every aspect of this nation seems intricately designed and cleverly weaved together to create a utopian-like society.

The grandness of Wakanda evokes a question that T’Challa, the Black Panther, must face in his new position as king of Wakanda: Why keep hidden from the world and refuse to help those in need with their vast resources? When confronted by the lingering results of his father’s past, T’Challa is forced to develop his own beliefs and realize that the person he looked up to most was not always correct. With thrilling action scenes and a thought-provoking story, Black Panther is truly a breathtaking movie.

Yet along with all of the reasons why this movie is great, there are portions that detract from the overall experience. The broken Korean spoken by the apparent natives (this one is super nit-picky, but it irked me nonetheless) and the horrible CGI in a few of the fight scenes are examples of moments that took away from the immersion. Still, it definitely wasn’t enough to turn me off from the movie as a whole.

All in all, Black Panther has quickly become one of my favorite movies. I would wholeheartedly recommend this movie to anyone.

8/10
